Where is Bryce Canyon City?
Bryce Canyon City is located in Garfield County, Utah. It's about 20 miles (32 km) east of a town called Panguitch. The town sits just outside the main entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park. It's also about 2.5 miles (4 km) north of the park's visitor center.
The town is right next to Utah State Route 63. This road is close to a popular spot in the park called Sunset Point. The town's borders go north to Utah State Route 12.
What's the Weather Like?
The weather in Bryce Canyon City can change a lot between day and night. It doesn't rain much throughout the year. The area has what is called a humid continental climate. This means it has warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
How Did Bryce Canyon City Start?
Early Days and Ruby's Inn
The town began in 1916 when a man named Reuben C. "Ruby" Syrett built a lodge and cabins. This was when people were just starting to visit Bryce Canyon. His business, called Ruby's Inn, grew as the park became more popular. Bryce Canyon became a national park in 1928.
Ruby's Inn became a very important stop for travelers. It offered many services, like places to stay and eat. This helped a small community grow around it. Ruby Syrett even gave land to the state. This land was used to build a road, now Utah State Route 63. This road put Ruby's Inn right at the park's entrance.
Becoming a Town
For a while, the Syrett family, who owned Ruby's Inn, wanted the area to become an official town. They hoped this would help them get money from sales taxes. This money could be used to improve things like the town's water system.
In 2007, a new state law was passed in Utah. This law made it easier for areas with 100 to 999 residents to become a town. If one person or family owned most of the land, they could ask for the area to be incorporated. The county then had to agree and appoint a mayor and town council.
The Syrett family quickly used this new law. They asked for Bryce Canyon City to become a town. Officials in Garfield County had said no before. But with the new law, they had to say yes. So, on July 23, 2007, Bryce Canyon City became the first town created under this new law.
The law changed again in 2008. The new law required at least five people to ask for a town to be formed. Also, no one person could own more than 40% of the land. The county government also got more power in the process. And the town's leaders had to be elected by the people.
