Bubista's Playing Career: From Defender to Legend
Playing for Clubs
Bubista started his professional football journey in 1995. He joined a Spanish club called Badajoz, which played in the Segunda División, a top league in Spain. He played two matches there. After his time in Spain, in 1997, Bubista moved to Angola and played for ASA. He stayed with ASA for six seasons, showing his skills as a defender. In 2003, he returned to his home country, Cape Verde, and joined Falcões do Norte.
Representing Cape Verde

Bubista's Coaching Journey: Leading the Blue Sharks
Starting as a Coach
After he stopped playing, Bubista decided to become a football manager. He coached several local clubs in Cape Verde. These included Mindelense, Académica do Mindelo, Sporting Praia, and Batuque. He gained valuable experience guiding these teams.
Leading the National Team to Success
In January 2020, Bubista was chosen to be the manager of the Cape Verde national team. Under his leadership, the team, often called the "Blue Sharks," achieved amazing things.
- He led them to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. They secured their spot with a 1–0 win against Mozambique.
- Later, he guided the team to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. There, they performed very well, reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament.
- The biggest moment came on October 13, 2025. Bubista led Cape Verde to a historic 3–0 victory against Eswatini. This win meant Cape Verde qualified for their first-ever FIFA World Cup! This made Cape Verde the second-smallest nation to ever reach the World Cup, after Iceland in 2018.
- Because of his incredible achievements in 2025, Bubista was named the CAF Coach of the Year at the CAF Awards 2025. This is a huge honor for a football coach in Africa.
