Bulcher is a very small community located in the northwestern part of Cooke County, Texas, United States. It is not a city with its own government, but rather a quiet place where only a few people live. In 2000, only six people were reported to live in Bulcher. It is part of the larger Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area.

Exploring Bulcher's Past

Early Settlers and Community Growth

The first people to settle in the Bulcher area were John A. Dennis and his family. They arrived in 1872, looking for a new home. Soon after, other families moved there. Matthew A. Morris became the first postmaster in 1874 when a post office was set up. John Scanland also helped the community by giving land for the Scanland Cemetery.

In 1875, William H. Cox built a cotton gin in Bulcher. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds. This was important for farmers in the area. For a while, about 250 people lived in Bulcher.

The Oil Boom and Population Changes

On June 24, 1926, something big happened: oil was discovered nearby! This led to a short "boom" where more people came to Bulcher hoping to find work. However, after the boom, Bulcher's population started to shrink. By 1933, only 40 people lived there, and by 2000, the number was just six.

Notable Events in Bulcher

On May 7, 1995, a strong tornado (an F3 tornado) hit Bulcher. Despite its small size, Bulcher is known for hosting an exciting annual event called the Last Man Standing motorcycle race. This race challenges riders to navigate very tough terrain. A famous Polish motorcyclist, Tadeusz Błażusiak, won the race in 2007.

In 1921, Bulcher even had a small branch of the Cooke County Library nearby, showing that the community valued learning. There are also two cemeteries close to Bulcher: Shiloh and Coker.
