About Bumpass Mountain

Bumpass Mountain is part of the Cascade Range, which is a long chain of mountains in western North America. It's found in Shasta County, California, in the U.S.. The mountain is a big part of the beautiful scenery inside Lassen Volcanic National Park.

How Tall is It?

Bumpass Mountain reaches an elevation of about 8,753 feet (2,668 meters) above sea level. That's really tall! It's one of the many impressive peaks you can find in this volcanic park.

Winter Wonderland

During the winter months, Bumpass Mountain gets a huge amount of snow. It's common for the snow to pile up to more than 300 inches (7.6 meters) deep near the mountain. This heavy snowfall makes the area a true winter wonderland, but it also means some parts of the park can be closed for a long time due to the deep snow.

Who Was Bumpass?

Both Bumpass Mountain and the nearby geothermal area, Bumpass Hell, are named after a person named Kendall V. Bumpass.

Kendall V. Bumpass's Story

Kendall V. Bumpass was a hunter, guide, and prospector who explored the area around Red Bluff, California, before the 1870s. He was one of the early explorers of this wild and beautiful region. The story goes that he discovered the bubbling mud pots and steaming vents of Bumpass Hell. He accidentally stepped into a hot pool and burned his leg, which is how the "Hell" part of the name came to be! Naming places after important local figures or events was a common practice back then.
