A Look at Harrison's History
The land that became Harrison was first mapped out in the 1850s. Surveyors, who are people who measure land, worked for the U.S. government. They walked through the forests and waded through streams to measure the land.
In 1854, after surveying the southern part, a surveyor wrote about the area. They described it as mostly rough and uneven. The soil was not very good. There were many small, clear lakes with gravelly shores. The main trees were hemlock and birch, with some small white pine trees.
Ten years later, in 1865, another team surveyed the northern part of the town. They noted that there were no large rivers, but the Wisconsin River entered the area. They said the trees were not of great quality, including hemlock, birch, and tamarack. The soil was not the best, and there were no settlements or people living there at that time.
