Bunmi Rotimi's Early Life and School Years
Bunmi Rotimi was born on July 16, 1995, in Alexandria, Virginia. His parents moved to the United States from Africa. He went to West Potomac High School. Even though he only started playing football in his freshman year, he quickly became good at it. By his junior year, he earned special honors for his performance.
Playing College Football at Old Dominion
After high school, Bunmi went to Old Dominion University. In his first year, 2013, he was a "redshirt" player. This means he practiced with the team but did not play in games. This allowed him to develop his skills.
As a freshman, Bunmi played in twelve games. He started two of those games as a defensive tackle. He made 30 tackles, which means he stopped the opposing team's players 30 times.
In his second year, he played in twelve games again and started eleven. He made 36 tackles and was second on his team with 4.5 sacks. A sack is when a defensive player tackles the opposing team's quarterback behind the line of scrimmage.
For his junior year, Bunmi changed his position to defensive end. He started thirteen games and made 44 tackles. He also had seven sacks that season. In his senior year, he started seven games, making 29 tackles and 5.5 sacks. During a game against Marshall, he even blocked a field goal attempt! After his senior season, he received an honorable mention for the all-Conference USA team.
Bunmi Rotimi's Professional Football Journey
After college, Bunmi Rotimi was not chosen in the 2018 NFL draft. However, he was signed by the Chicago Bears on May 11, 2018, as an undrafted free agent. This means a team signed him even though he wasn't picked in the draft. He was released by the Bears before the preseason games began.
Playing for the Arizona Hotshots
Bunmi's next team was the Arizona Hotshots. This team was part of a league called the Alliance of American Football (AAF). He played in five games for the Hotshots. During these games, he made six tackles and one sack. The AAF league stopped playing games shortly after.
Time with the New York Guardians
After the AAF league ended, Bunmi joined the New York Guardians. This team was part of the XFL league. He played in five games for the Guardians. He made 25 tackles before the XFL league also paused its operations.
Joining the Washington Football Team
On July 28, 2021, Bunmi Rotimi signed with the Washington Football Team. He was released from the main roster when the team made its final cuts. However, he was signed to their practice squad the very next day. A practice squad allows players to train with the team.
On November 13, 2021, he was moved to the active roster. This meant he could play in official games. He made his first career sack in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15.
In March 2022, the team kept Bunmi by placing an "exclusive-rights free agent" tender on him. This meant only they could sign him. However, he was placed on injured reserve in August 2022. He was released a week later with an injury settlement.
Playing for the Arlington Renegades
Bunmi Rotimi then played for the Arlington Renegades in the XFL during the 2023 season. He was part of the team that won the XFL championship in 2023! He re-signed with the Renegades on January 29, 2024, and continues to play for them.
