Bunnik (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈbʏnɪk]) is a charming village and a municipality (which is like a local government area) in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands. Its history goes back almost 2000 years!
Long ago, the Romans built a fort called Fectio (now Vechten) here. This fort had a harbour on the Rhine river, which was the edge of the mighty Roman Empire. The fort grew into a busy trading spot. It kept going even after the Romans left in the 4th century. Later, the area was settled by the Frisians and the Franks. In the 8th and 9th centuries, the villages of Bunninchem (Bunnik), Lodichem (Odijk), and Wercundia (Werkhoven) started to grow.
Today, Bunnik is known for its beautiful nature, with lots of forests and farmlands. It's also home to the oldest Youth Hostel in the Netherlands. A big European construction company, Royal BAM Group, has its main office in Bunnik.
