History
Burden was first planned out in 1879. This happened because people expected a railroad to come through the area soon. One of the people who helped plan the town was Robert F. Burden. The town was named after him.
The railroad, which later became the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line, arrived on February 1, 1882. Burden became an important stop and shipping point along this new railway.
Early buildings in Burden included a general store, a drug store, and a post office. The post office started in 1879 and was called Burdenville until 1884. The town's first newspaper, The Enterprise, began printing in 1880. By 1882, it was read by about 900 people. A school that was located outside of Burden moved into the town in the summer of 1881.
