History of Burlington
The area where Burlington now stands was first known as "Hurd's Ridge." It got this name from Tristram Hurd, who was the first non-native person to settle there in 1824. The town of Burlington officially became a town on March 8, 1832. This means it was formally recognized and given the right to govern itself.
