A Look Back at Burnside's Past

Burnside has an interesting history. It was once located along the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad line. This railroad was very important for moving goods and people.

Early Businesses and Industry

In its early days, Burnside was a busy place. It had four general stores where people could buy everyday items. There was also a grocery store for food. Two sawmills operated in the area. Sawmills cut logs into lumber.

A big company called the J. M. Griffin Lumber Company had a large mill here. This company was based in Wilmington, Delaware. Their mill in Burnside was huge! It included:

  • A sawmill to cut wood
  • A planing mill to smooth the wood
  • Dry kilns to dry the wood
  • A power plant to create electricity
  • About 23 miles of its own railroad tracks

This lumber company even built a special "mill town" for its workers. This town had homes, a school for children, and churches for the community.

Burnside Park: A Community Hub

Today, the Philadelphia Neshoba County Park Commission manages Burnside Park. This park is a great place for people to gather and have fun. It features:

  • An auditorium for events
  • Picnic pavilions for outdoor meals
  • A cool suspension bridge
  • A fishing lake where you can try to catch fish

The Burnside Post Office

For many years, Burnside had its own post office. It operated from 1905 until 1951. During that time, three different people served as the postmaster. A postmaster is in charge of the post office. After 1951, people in Burnside got their mail from the post office in nearby Philadelphia.
