Burton's History: From Settlement to City

Even though Native Americans and trappers lived here first, many of Burton's early settlers came from towns in New York. They arrived around 1835.

The Atherton Settlement

For about 20 years, this area was known as the Atherton settlement. This name came from brothers Shubael and Perus Atherton, and their nephew Pliny Atherton Skinner. They settled near Thread Creek in 1835. Even today, some of their family members still live in Burton!

Becoming a Township

The area officially became Burton Township in 1855. Before that, it was part of Flint Township. The northern part of Burton was even part of Kearsley Township for a few years. On October 12, 1855, Burton Township was separated from Flint Township. The first official meeting for the township happened on April 7, 1856. A post office opened in 1861 but only stayed open for about a year.

Over many years, the nearby City of Flint took over large parts of Burton Township. This was done to help Flint grow and get more money.

Becoming a City

On May 16, 1972, the people living in Burton Township voted to become a city. So, the City of Burton was officially formed on July 1, 1972. More recently, in 2017, Burton started getting its water from the Karegnondi Water Authority.
