Bush River (South Carolina) facts for kids
The Bush River is a cool waterway, about 30 miles (48 km) long, located in western South Carolina, USA. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one, the Saluda River. From there, its waters join the Congaree River and then the Santee River, eventually reaching the big Atlantic Ocean. So, the Bush River is a small but important part of a much larger river system!
People sometimes called it "Bush Creek" in the past. But in 1973, the official United States Board on Geographic Names decided its proper name is "Bush River."
Where Does the Bush River Start and Go?
The Bush River begins in Laurens County, South Carolina, just south of a town called Clinton, South Carolina. It then flows generally towards the southeast, passing by Joanna, South Carolina.
Joining the Saluda River
The river continues its journey into Newberry County, South Carolina. About 11 miles (17 km) south of the town of Newberry, South Carolina, the Bush River meets the Saluda River. This meeting point is now part of a large, human-made lake called Lake Murray (South Carolina). This lake was created when the Saluda Dam was built on the Saluda River.
