The Story of Bushells
How Bushells Started
Bushells was founded by a person named Alfred Bushell. He started his business in 1883. Back then, it was just a small tea shop in Queensland, Australia.
Later, in 1899, Alfred's sons decided to move the business. They took it to Sydney. There, they began selling tea to other businesses. This made Bushells Australia's very first company to sell tea commercially.
Growing the Business
As the company grew, they opened a tea factory. This factory was located on Harrington Street in Sydney. They also started a special department for roasting coffee. This coffee section was in a place called Atherton Place in The Rocks.
In 1940, the Bushell family bought a famous old house. It was called Carthona and was in Sydney. In the 1980s, Bushells started making more types of coffee. They sold these under the name Bushells Coffee.
Changes Over Time
In 1998, a company called FreshFood Services Pty Ltd bought the Bushells Coffee brand. This happened when FreshFood bought several coffee brands from another big company, Unilever. FreshFood also bought the Bushells Coffee business in New Zealand.
The tea part of Bushells stayed with Unilever for a while. But in 2022, Unilever sold most of its tea businesses. These were bought by a company called CVC Capital Partners. This new company is now known as Lipton Teas and Infusions.
Even with these changes, Bushells coffee is still made. It continues to be produced at the factory in Concord.
Future Plans for the Factory
FreshFood, the company that owns Bushells Coffee, had a plan to close the Concord factory. This plan was announced in February 2024. However, as of January 2018, the planning for this closure was still very early. It was expected to happen about three to five years from that time. This means the factory closure was planned to occur sometime between 2021 and 2023.
