Buta Singh (born 21 March 1934 – died 2 January 2021) was an important Indian politician. He was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress party. He held many big jobs in the government, including being the Union Home Minister for India. He also served as the Governor of Bihar and was the chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes from 2007 to 2010.
Early Life and Education
Buta Singh was born on 21 March 1934 in Mustafapur, a village in the Jalandhar district of Punjab. This area was part of British India at the time.
He went to Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar, where he earned a B.A. (Hons) degree. He later studied at Guru Nanak Khalsa College in Bombay and received his M.A. degree. He also earned a Ph.D. from Bundelkhand University.
In 1964, Buta Singh married Manjit Kaur. They had three children together. Before becoming a politician, he worked as a journalist. He first entered politics as a member of the Akali Dal party. Later, in the late 1960s, he joined the Indian National Congress.
Political Journey
Buta Singh was first elected to the Lok Sabha (which is like the lower house of India's Parliament) in 1962. He represented the Moga area. He was elected to the Lok Sabha many times over the years, from different areas like Ropar and Jalore.
He worked closely with former Indian Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He became the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) from 1978 to 1980.
He held many important government positions. He was the Home Minister of India and later the Governor of Bihar from 2004 to 2006. He also managed other government departments, including railways, commerce, parliamentary affairs, sports, shipping, agriculture, communications, and housing.
From 2007 to 2010, he served as the chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. This role was considered as important as a Cabinet Minister.
Buta Singh also wrote a book called Punjabi Speaking State – A Critical Analysis. He also wrote articles about Punjabi literature and Sikh history. He was chosen by Indira Gandhi to help select a new symbol for the Congress party when it split. He was also the chairman of the Asian Games organizing committee when India hosted the games in 1982. As a minister, he oversaw the rebuilding of the Golden Temple after some events.
Later Life and Passing
Buta Singh passed away in New Delhi on 2 January 2021, at the age of 86. He died due to complications from a brain hemorrhage.
