Butte City is a small, historic place in Amador County, California. It used to be a busy mining town during the California Gold Rush. Today, only one special building, the Butte Store, remains from those early days. It helps us remember the history of this old town.

Discovering Butte City's Past

Butte City was once a lively place filled with people hoping to find gold. Like many towns in California, it grew quickly because of the Gold Rush. Many buildings were built to serve the miners and their families.

The Butte Store is the only building left from the original town. It stands as a reminder of what Butte City used to be. At one time, there were about 100 buildings in the town.

The Historic Butte Store

The Butte Store was built a long time ago, in 1857. An Italian stonemason named Enrico Bruni built it. He was a skilled worker who shaped stones for buildings.

The store is made from strong materials. It uses brick and fieldstone, which are natural stones found in fields. These stones came from Calaveras, a nearby area. The building also has three doors made of iron, making them very strong and secure.

What the Store Was Used For

Over the years, the Butte Store had many different uses. A man named Xavier Benoist used it as both a store and a bakery. People could buy supplies and fresh bread there.

The building also served as a post office. This was important for people to send and receive letters. Later, it became a general store called Ginocchio's. The Ginocchio family owned and ran the store for 50 years. It was a central place for the community.

The store finally closed in the 1900s. Even though it is no longer open, it is still very important. It is now recognized as a California Historical Landmark. This means it is a special place that helps tell the story of California's past.
