Butte City (which used to be called Butte) is a small, unincorporated community in Glenn County, California. This means it's a town that isn't officially part of a city government. It sits right on the east bank of the Sacramento River. Butte City is about 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Willows. It is located at an elevation of 89 feet (27 meters) above sea level.
Butte City offers many fun outdoor activities. You can go fishing and boating on the Sacramento River. There's even a special boat ramp for easy access. During certain times of the year, people also enjoy duck hunting. The land around Butte City is mostly used for farming. Farmers grow crops like rice, walnuts, alfalfa, and corn here.

Butte City has a long and interesting history. The first post office in Butte City opened way back in 1883. This was an important step for the community.
What Was Butte City Like Before?
In earlier times, Butte City was a busy place. It had its own restaurant where people could eat. There was also a store to buy supplies. A bank helped people with their money. However, these businesses have all closed down over the years.
Butte City was once a very important place for shipping goods. Farmers would send their grain down the Sacramento River on large boats called barges. Raising hogs and poultry (like chickens) were also big businesses in the area.
Bridges Over the Sacramento River
Since the 1880s, there has always been a bridge crossing the Sacramento River at Butte City. These bridges help people and goods move across the river easily. A brand new bridge is being built right now (in 2023). This new bridge will carry California State Route 162 and will be the fifth bridge at this important spot.
A cemetery is located just east of town. Many people who lived in the area long ago are buried there. It's a quiet place that reminds us of Butte City's past.
