A Look Back: Butztown's History
In 1795, a man named George Butz built a big stone house here. That's how the community got its name, Butztown!
About eleven years later, he built a grist mill. This mill was located nearby along Nancy Run creek. Nancy Run creek flows into the Lehigh River.
George Butz was a farmer. But he also ran a store and a tavern. Around 1825, he faced some financial problems.
How Butztown Got Its Name
Other families also moved to this area. From 1830 to 1905, the community was known as Butzville. After 1905, it became known by its current name, Butztown.
In the early 1900s, the city of Bethlehem grew larger. During this time, the western part of Butztown became part of Bethlehem.
The Butztown Hotel
After George Butz had financial troubles, his saw mill was sold. R.T. Schweitzer bought it. He turned the mill into the Butztown Hotel. This hotel became a main landmark in the village.
The Butztown Hotel was located on Easton Avenue. In the year 2000, the hotel changed its name. It became known as the Keystone Pub.
