Description

What is Buzbury Rings?

Buzbury Rings is built on top of a hill called Keynston Down. It is a large area with old earthworks. These earthworks are like big banks and ditches made of earth. They were built a very long time ago.

What Did It Look Like?

Imagine a big, ancient fort! Buzbury Rings has two main parts, like two giant rings on the ground.

  • The inside part is called the inner enclosure. It covers about 3 acres. This area was surrounded by a single large earth bank. This bank was about 30 feet wide and 4 feet high.
  • Around this inner part was an even bigger outer enclosure. This outer ring covers about 10 acres. It wasn't perfectly centered with the inner one.
  • On the north and west sides, the outer ring had a single earth bank. This bank was about 20 feet wide and 3 feet high. There was also a ditch outside this bank, but it is now buried.
  • On the south side, the outer ring had two banks. These banks were up to 24 feet wide. There was a ditch about 10 feet wide between them. There are also signs of more earthworks to the south.

Today, a road (the B3082) cuts through the site. This road has removed part of the inner bank. Other tracks have also caused breaks in the inner bank. Part of the outer enclosure is now inside a golf course called Ashley Wood.

What Was Found There?

Inside the inner enclosure, there are round dips in the ground. These dips are about 20 to 30 feet across. They were probably the places where ancient buildings once stood.

Over the years, archaeologists have found many objects at Buzbury Rings. They also found signs of people living there. These finds date from the Iron Age all the way to the late Roman period. Most of these items were found in the inner enclosure.

In 2006, experts used special tools like geophysical surveys and lidar to study the site. These tools help them see what is under the ground without digging. From these studies, they think that the very first remains at Buzbury Rings are from the Neolithic period. This was an even older time! It seems people used this site for a very long time, from the Neolithic period through the Iron Age and into the Roman period.
