C. J. Smith's Football Journey
Playing for the Philadelphia Eagles
C. J. Smith joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016. He was not chosen in the 2016 NFL draft, which means he was an undrafted free agent. This means teams can sign him even if he wasn't picked in the draft.
On September 4, 2016, the Eagles let him go. But the very next day, they signed him to their practice squad. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but are not on the main roster. On October 13, 2016, he was moved to the active roster, meaning he could play in games.
In 2017, the Eagles again let him go on September 2. He was signed back to the practice squad the next day. However, he was released from the practice squad on September 12, 2017.
Time with the Cleveland Browns
On September 15, 2017, C. J. Smith joined the Cleveland Browns' practice squad. He was moved to the Browns' active roster on December 16, 2017.
In March 2018, the Browns tried to trade Smith to the Seattle Seahawks. But the trade did not happen because Smith did not pass his physical exam with Seattle. So, he returned to the Browns. He was then let go by the Browns on April 12, 2018.
With the Denver Broncos
On April 13, 2018, the Denver Broncos picked up C. J. Smith. This is called being "claimed off waivers." It means another team wanted him after he was let go. He was let go by the Broncos on September 1, 2018.
Playing in Other Leagues
In 2019, C. J. Smith played for the Salt Lake Stallions. This team was part of a league called the Alliance of American Football. However, this league stopped playing games in April 2019.
Later in 2019, Smith was chosen to play for the Dallas Renegades. This team was part of the XFL football league.
