The CBC Jarvis Street Tower was a very tall structure in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was built in 1952 to help send out radio and television signals. For many years, it was one of the tallest structures in Canada. It was also the tallest building in Toronto for 15 years. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) owned this tower. It was located at 345 Jarvis Street in Toronto.

A Tall Tower in Toronto

The CBC Jarvis Street Tower was a special type of tower called a lattice tower. It stood 160 meters (about 540 feet) tall. This made it the second tallest freestanding structure in Canada for a while. It was also the second tallest lattice tower ever built in Canada. For 15 years, it was the tallest structure in Toronto. This changed in 1967 when the TD Tower was finished.

What the Tower Was Used For

The tower was used by several radio and TV stations. These included CBC stations like CBL-FM, CBLT, and CBLFT. Other stations like CJRT and CICA-TV also used it.

In 1976, most TV and radio signals in Toronto moved. They started broadcasting from the new CN Tower. This meant the Jarvis Street Tower was no longer needed for these main broadcasts.

Studios and Demolition

Next to the tower was a studio complex. This is where CBC Toronto made its radio and TV shows. For example, CBL radio used these studios. Even though its main transmitter was in Hornby, the shows were made at Jarvis Street. The CBC continued to use these studios until 1992. That's when they moved to the Canadian Broadcasting Centre.

The tower itself was painted red and white. This was a safety rule for aircraft. The bright colors helped pilots see the tall tower when flying nearby.

The CBC Jarvis Street Tower stood until 2002. It was then taken down to make space for new buildings. A new condo development called Radio City now stands where the tower once was.
