About CKRZ-FM
CKRZ-FM began broadcasting in 1987. You can listen to it on your radio at 100.3 FM. If you have Rogers cable, you can find it on channel 951 in Brantford, Kitchener, Woodstock, and London.
This radio station is unique because it broadcasts in many languages. You can hear programs in Cayuga, Mohawk, and other languages. This helps connect with different parts of the community. On Sundays, CKRZ-FM even hosts a fun radio bingo game. You can win prizes, sometimes up to $16,000!
Facing Challenges
In 2009, CKRZ-FM faced some tough times. The station was having financial difficulties. This meant they had less money coming in from advertisements. Because of these money troubles, they thought they might have to stop broadcasting.
The community quickly came together to help. The SONICS board and members held an emergency meeting. They all agreed that the radio station was very important to the community. They voted to keep it on the air.
A kind person named Walt Juchniewicz stepped in to help. He is a broadcast engineer, which means he knows a lot about radio equipment. Walt offered to give his time and equipment for free. He helped to improve the station's studios. He said that the Six Nations community was wonderful. He believed the station could get back on its feet.
Thanks to this support, CKRZ-FM started broadcasting again on February 12, 2009. For a short time, it played mostly automated music. But there was always someone live to share important news and community announcements. This helped SONICS work on solving the station's money problems.
