History of Cabery
Cabery was started around 1878. This happened after the Kankakee and Southwestern Railroad was built through the area. The village was named after John R. Caberry. He was an early settler and a merchant from Chicago. Cabery officially became a village in 1881.
The village faced a big challenge early on. On May 3, 1885, a large fire broke out. It started in a hat shop and quickly spread. The fire destroyed 24 businesses and 14 homes. The damage was estimated to be about $100,000. Amazingly, no one was hurt or died in the fire.
Cabery also had its own high school. The Cabery High School served the community from 1912 to 1946. Their football team, the Cabery Cardinals, became very famous across the state. They were known for being a very strong team.
The population of Cabery was highest in 1900, with 385 people. After that, the number of people living in the village slowly went down. There was a small increase in the 1980s, but the population has continued to decline since then.
