Cabo Rojo barrio-pueblo is a special kind of neighborhood in Puerto Rico. It's the main center, or "seat," of the Cabo Rojo municipality. In 2010, about 1,078 people lived here.

Just like in Spain, towns in Puerto Rico often have a central area called a pueblo. This area usually has a main square (called a plaza), the town hall (where local government works), and a Catholic church. Every year, fun festivals called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in the central plaza.

The Central Plaza and Its Church

The central plaza, or town square, is a lively spot in Cabo Rojo barrio-pueblo. It's a place where people gather, relax, and enjoy events from morning until night. Long ago, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies said that these plazas should be big enough for celebrations and for all the people living nearby. These rules also suggested that streets around the plaza should have comfortable walkways to protect people from the sun and rain.

Right across from the main plaza is the Parroquia San Miguel Arcángel. This historic church was built a long time ago, between 1771 and 1783. It was partly damaged by lightning in 1861, but its roof was fixed. The church's current front was designed by Onofre Llompart, and its construction started in 1878. Later, in 1965, the roof and the inside of the church were updated.

History of Cabo Rojo Barrio-Pueblo

After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.

In 1899, the U.S. government took a census (a count of the population) in Puerto Rico. At that time, the population of Cabo Rojo Pueblo was 2,744 people. By 2010, the population was 1,078.

In July 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provided money to help repair Cabo Rojo's main plaza.
