What Does Cachipay Mean?
The name Cachipay likely comes from the Chibcha people. It is thought to be the name for a fruit. This fruit is similar to the corozo, which is a common fruit in Colombia.
A Look at Cachipay's History
Cachipay has a long history, going back thousands of years. Archaeologists have found old ceramic items in an area called Tocarema. These items are about 2,750 years old. This means people lived here around 750 BCE.
Early Inhabitants
Before the Spanish arrived, the Panche people lived in this region. They often had conflicts with the Muisca. The Muisca lived in the Altiplano Cundiboyacense area to the east.
The Battle of Tocarema
A major historical event happened in Tocarema on August 20, 1538. This was the Battle of Tocarema. In this battle, Muisca guecha warriors joined forces with Spanish soldiers. The Spanish soldiers were led by conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. They faced the Panche people. The Spanish had stronger weapons, cavalry (soldiers on horseback), and trained dogs. Because of this, they were able to defeat the Panche.
Modern Cachipay
The modern town of Cachipay was officially founded much later. This happened on November 26, 1982.
