Quipile is a small town and a municipality in Colombia. It is located in the Tequendama Province of the Cundinamarca region.
Quipile is surrounded by other towns. To the north, it borders Bituima and Vianí. To the south, you'll find Jerusalén and Anapoima. On its eastern side are Anolaima, Cachipay, and La Mesa. Finally, to the west, it borders San Juan de Rioseco and Pulí.
The main part of Quipile, its urban center, sits high up at about 2,012 metres (6,601 ft) above sea level. It is about 83 kilometres (52 mi) away from Bogotá, which is the capital city of Colombia.

What Does the Name Quipile Mean?
The name Quipile comes from the Cariban language. This language was spoken by the Panche people, who lived in the area long ago.
The word "Quipile" means "strong and superior place." It comes from the name of a leader, or cacique, of the Panche people, whose name was Quipili.
A Look Back: The History of Quipile
Before the Spanish arrived in Colombia, the area where Quipile is now was home to the Panche. These people were part of the local communities.
The Panche became part of the Spanish rule after a big event called the Battle of Tocarema. This battle happened on August 20, 1538.
The exact date and person who founded Quipile are not fully known. However, it is traditionally believed that José María Lozano founded the town on November 12, 1825.

Ancient Discoveries: Paleontology in Quipile
In 1956, some very old animal remains were found in Quipile. These were fossils of huge, ancient animals.
The fossils belonged to:
- Megatherium: A giant ground sloth.
- Mastodon: An ancient relative of elephants.
These animals lived during the Pleistocene epoch, which was a long time ago. Scientists believe these fossils are about 460,000 years old! Finding these fossils helps us learn about the ancient life that once roamed this area.
