Cadwaladers is a well-known family-run chain of cafes. It started in Gwynedd, Wales, and is famous for its delicious ice cream.
The very first Cadwaladers ice cream shop opened in 1927. It was started by a husband and wife, David and Hannah Cadwalader, in a town called Criccieth. At first, it was a general store that sold many different things.

The Story of Cadwaladers Ice Cream
How It All Began
After David and Hannah, their son Dafydd took over the business. He decided to focus more on ice cream. He even stopped selling fish!
Dafydd started selling a special vanilla ice cream. Hannah Cadwalader had created this secret recipe. People loved it, and it became very popular after World War II. The ice cream was made right there in the shop.
Growing the Business
Dafydd Cadwalader passed away in 1983. After that, a Welsh family called the Andrews Family bought Cadwaladers. They also own another company called Castle Leisure.
The new owners helped the business grow a lot. They opened more cafes across North Wales and in Cardiff. Today, you can find Cadwaladers stores in places like Betws-y-Coed, Barry Island, Criccieth, Porthmadog, Tenby, and Porthcawl. There are also three stores in Cardiff and one in England at Trentham Gardens.
What You Can Find at Cadwaladers
Besides the original vanilla ice cream, Cadwaladers offers many other tasty treats. You can enjoy different flavors of ice cream and fancy sundaes.
They also serve their own special blends of coffee and various types of loose leaf tea. Of course, they have other hot drinks too.
If you visit the Criccieth store, you might even hear some live Jazz music! They often have performances from September to June, outside of the busiest tourist season.
Overcoming Challenges
A Difficult Time for the Company
In September 2015, Cadwaladers faced some tough times. The company had a few problems that made things difficult. For example, a new store they opened in Manchester in 2010 didn't do as well as they hoped. Also, their store in Portmeirion had to close in 2013. Sales were also a bit slow in the summer of 2015.
The Company's Comeback
Because of these challenges, the company needed to make some changes. However, the management team stepped in and bought the company. This helped to keep the business going.
Even though five stores had to close, which meant about 10 jobs were lost, the changes helped save 92 other jobs. This meant that most of the people working for Cadwaladers could keep their jobs, and the popular cafes could continue to serve their customers.
