The Story of Cadwaladers
The first Cadwaladers ice cream shop opened in 1927. It was in a town called Criccieth. A husband and wife, David and Hannah Cadwalader, started it. At first, it was a small general store.
A Secret Ice Cream Recipe
Later, their son, Dafydd, took over the business. He decided to focus on something special. He stopped selling fish and started making ice cream. This was after World War II.
Hannah Cadwalader created a secret vanilla ice cream recipe. It was made right there in the shop. People loved it! The company even had a fun saying about it. They said it had "six pounds of shan't tell you" and "a great deal of love and care." This special recipe is not used anymore.
Growing the Business
Dafydd Cadwalader passed away in 1983. After that, a Welsh family called the Andrews bought Cadwaladers. They also own Castle Leisure. The new owners helped the business grow a lot. They opened new cafes across North Wales and in Cardiff.
Today, you can find Cadwaladers cafes in many places in Wales. These include Betws-y-Coed, Barry Island, Criccieth, Porthmadog, Tenby, and Porthcawl. There are also three cafes in Cardiff. You can even find a Cadwaladers in England at Trentham Gardens.
What Cadwaladers Sells

Overcoming Challenges
In 2015, Cadwaladers faced some tough times. They had opened a new store in Manchester in 2010. This store did not do as well as hoped. Also, their Portmeirion store had to close in 2013. Sales were also lower in the summer of 2015.
The company worked hard to fix things. Some stores had to close, and a few jobs were lost. But the management team bought the company. This helped to save 92 jobs. Cadwaladers kept going strong!
