Caguach (also spelled Cahuach) is a well-known small island in the Chiloé Archipelago in southern Chile. It is part of the commune of Quinchao. The island looks like a crescent moon and has different areas called Capilla Antigua, El Estero, El Pasaje, and La Capilla. Caguach is located to the east of the archipelago. You can reach it by boat in about one and a half hours from Achao or four hours from Castro, the capital of Chiloé.
Caguach is often called 'the island of devotion'. This is because of a very important yearly celebration held there. This special event honors Jesus of Nazareth.
The Famous Caguach Festival
The island is famous for its annual ceremony dedicated to Jesus of Nazareth. During this festival, a statue of Jesus from Cahuach is carried in a procession. This parade moves across the island's open area. Music and dancing are a big part of the celebration. It is one of the most important religious festivals in southern Chile.
When is the Festival Held?
Traditionally, the celebration was held every year on August 30. However, since the early 2000s, the date has changed. Now, the festival takes place on the third Sunday of January. This change was made to attract more visitors during the summer. It helps people enjoy the local culture and traditions.
The Historic Church of Caguach
The Church of Caguach is at the heart of the island's festivities. This church is very special. It is one of the 16 Churches of Chiloé. These churches were named Chilean National Monuments in 1979. Later, on November 30, 2000, UNESCO recognized them as World Heritage Sites. This means they are important historical and cultural sites for the whole world.
