The Church of Caguach is a special Catholic church found on Caguach Island. This island is part of the Chiloé Archipelago in southern Chile. It is a very important building for the people who live there.
A Special Place
The Church of Caguach was named a National Monument of Chile in 2000. This means it is a protected and important historical site in Chile. It is also one of 16 churches in Chiloé that are part of a special group. These churches were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites on November 30, 2000. Being a World Heritage Site means it is recognized globally for its unique cultural value.
A Rich History
The first Church of Caguach was built a long time ago. Sadly, the original church was completely destroyed by a fire in 1919. But the people of Caguach did not give up. They rebuilt the church in 1925. They used wood, just like the first church. This new building was actually the third church built on Caguach Island.
The Big Celebration
The church's patron saint is Jesus of Nazareth. He is also the patron saint of the Church of Aldachildo. People celebrate his feast day on August 30 and on the third Sunday of January. This celebration is the most important religious holiday in the entire Chiloé Archipelago.
The tradition started in 1778. A Spanish Franciscan missionary named Fray Hilario Martínez helped to make it popular. The Church of Caguach is the main place for these festivities. The celebration includes music, dancing, and special parades. During the parades, people carry an image of Jesus. This image shows him carrying the cross, wearing a purple robe, and a crown of thorns. It represents Jesus during his suffering.
