Exploring Caguana's Geography
Caguana is located in Puerto Rico, a beautiful island in the Caribbean. It sits about 1,302 feet (397 meters) above sea level. This barrio is found south of another area called Santa Rosa in Utuado.
Caguana covers an area of about 15.57 square miles (40.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny part being water. The Tanamá River flows through Caguana, adding to its natural beauty.
Caguana's Rich History
Caguana is famous for its very old historical sites. It is one of the few places in Puerto Rico that has an ancient area for special games. These games were similar to ballgames played a long time ago in the Caribbean.
Ancient Ball Courts and Taíno People
The Caguana Ceremonial Ball Courts Site in Utuado is a very important place. It helps us learn about the Taíno people who lived there centuries ago. The Taíno were the native people of Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands. This site preserves the ancient courts where they played their traditional Batéy games.
Becoming Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, showed that 2,555 people lived in the Caguana barrio at that time.
