Early Life and School Days
Cahit Külebi was born in 1917 in Çeltek, a village near Zile in Tokat Province. He went to elementary school in Niksar and finished his middle school in Sivas. His family later took the last name Erencan. However, the poet chose to use "Külebi" as his pen name.
He then moved to Istanbul to continue his education. In 1940, he graduated from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature. This was part of a special school for future teachers. While he was a student, he started using "Külebi" as his writing name. He thought his principal might not like him writing poems during his studies. He even studied in the same class as another famous writer, Behçet Necatigil.
His Career Journey
After finishing school, Cahit Külebi became a literature teacher. He taught at Antalya High School, Ankara State Conservatory, and Ankara Gazi High School. A well-known writer named Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar also taught at his school.
Later, he became an inspector for National Education. This meant he would check on schools and education across the country. In 1964, he worked as a cultural attaché for Turkey in Switzerland. A cultural attaché helps share a country's culture with other nations.
When he returned to Turkey, he continued working for the Ministry of National Education. He became a Chief Inspector and even a Deputy Undersecretary of Culture. He decided to retire in 1973. After 1976, he became the General Secretary of the Turkish Language Association. He worked there until 1983. Cahit Külebi passed away in Ankara in 1997.
