Cahuita is a lively district in Costa Rica, located in the Limón province. It's part of the Talamanca area and sits right on the beautiful Caribbean coast.

Cahuita became an official district on February 19, 1970. This happened through a special government decision called Decreto Ejecutivo 13.

Manzanillo: A Coastal Village

Manzanillo is a small village found at the end of Route 256. It's located just outside the Jairo Mora Sandoval Gandoca-Manzanillo Mixed Wildlife Refuge. Manzanillo is famous for its stunning white sand beach, which is lined with tall palm trees.

Cahuita's Rich Culture

Cahuita's culture and food are strongly influenced by its Caribbean location. The town is well-known for its beautiful beaches. You can also find delicious dessert crepes here, often made with local bananas, strawberries, and chocolate. Grilled chicken is another popular dish.

The town was also the home of Walter Ferguson (1919–2023). He was known as the "King of Calypso," a type of music. In 2019, when he turned 100, Costa Rica's vice president declared his birthday National Calypso Day.

Cahuita offers many attractions for visitors. The famous Playa Negra (Black Beach) is very close to town. The amazing Cahuita National Park is also nearby, perfect for exploring nature.

To the north of Cahuita is the city of Limón. If you head south, you'll find the town of Puerto Viejo. The main entrance to the Jairo Mora Sandoval Gandoca-Manzanillo Mixed Wildlife Refuge is also located in the Manzanillo village within this district.

Cahuita is connected by two main road routes:

Route 36 links Puerto Limón to Sixaola. Many roads in Cahuita are made of dirt, gravel, and stone. Because of this, visitors often need to rent a 4WD vehicle to reach some beaches and hotels.

Cahuita's Tropical Climate

Cahuita has a warm, tropical climate all year round. The temperatures stay pretty much the same throughout the year. Sunrise and sunset times also change very little, usually around 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The nearby Limón International Airport has similar average temperatures and rainfall.
