Cairo is a small community in Greene County, New York, United States. It is known as a hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a specific area that the government counts for population, but it's part of a larger town also called Cairo.

Where is Cairo Located?

The hamlet of Cairo is in the middle-eastern part of Greene County. You can find it at these coordinates: 42°18′9″N 74°0′13″W / 42.30250°N 74.00361°W / 42.30250; -74.00361.

Several main roads pass through or near Cairo. New York State Route 23 goes through the northern part of the community. This road can take you about 9 miles (14 km) southeast to the Rip Van Winkle Bridge over the Hudson River in Catskill. If you go west on Route 23 for about 16 miles (26 km), you'll reach Windham in the Catskill Mountains.

New York State Route 32 also joins Route 23 in the northeastern part of Cairo. It leads north about 10 miles (16 km) to Greenville. Going south on Route 32 for about 17 miles (27 km) will take you to Saugerties. Another road, New York State Route 145, starts from Route 23 in northern Cairo and goes northwest about 30 miles (48 km) to Middleburgh.

Land and Water

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Cairo CDP covers a total area of about 4.24 square miles (11.0 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.01 square miles (0.02 square kilometers), is water.

The Catskill Creek flows along the northern edge of the Cairo CDP. This creek eventually flows into the Hudson River.
