History of Caledonia
Early Days and Boomtown Life
Caledonia was first known as Goose River. It started as an important stop for the Hudson's Bay Company's steamships. These ships traveled on the Red River of the North. Caledonia quickly became a "boomtown" in the Red River Valley. A boomtown is a place that grows very fast, often because of a new industry or discovery.
It was also a stop for stagecoaches heading north to Fort Garry, which is now the city of Winnipeg in Canada.
County Seat and Decline
In 1875, when Traill County was created, Caledonia was chosen as the county seat. This meant it was the main town where the county government was located.
However, things changed quickly. In the same year, the Hudson's Bay Company closed its posts in the U.S., including the one in Caledonia. Later, when James J. Hill built his railroad through Traill County, it did not go through Caledonia. This was a big problem because railroads became the main way to transport goods and people.
The steamship business also started to decline. Because of these changes, the county seat was moved from Caledonia to Hillsboro in 1896. This caused Caledonia to become much smaller and quieter.
Geography of Caledonia
Caledonia is located right on the banks of the Goose River. This river flows into the larger Red River of the North. Its location near these rivers was important for its early history as a trading post.
