Calflax is a small, quiet place in Fresno County, California. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county area.

Calflax is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of a town called Coalinga. It sits at an elevation of 276 feet (84 meters) above sea level.

The Story of Calflax

Calflax began in the middle of the 1930s. At that time, farmers started planting crops like flax and cotton in the western part of the San Joaquin Valley. This area used to be very dry, but with new irrigation methods, it became good for farming.

Early Days of Calflax

When Calflax was first settled, it was a busy farming community. It had important places like a school for children, a general store where people could buy supplies, and a cotton gin. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds. This was very important for the cotton farmers in the area.

A Center for Research

In 1959, something new came to Calflax. The University of California opened its West Side Research and Extension Center right where Calflax was. This center is a place where scientists and researchers study new ways to farm and grow crops. They work on making farming better and more efficient.

Calflax Today

Today, Calflax is much quieter than it used to be. Most of the original community is gone. You can still find a few homes scattered around the area. It remains an important site for agricultural research thanks to the University of California's center.
