The Calico Hills are a cool mountain range in northwestern Nevada. You might also hear them called the Calico Mountains. These mountains stretch from north to south. They sit right along the western edge of the famous Black Rock Desert.
You can find the Calico Hills in western Humboldt County. A small part is also in the northwestern corner of Pershing County. They are about 30 miles north of a town called Gerlach, Nevada. The easiest way to get to the Calico Hills is by using Soldier Meadows Road. This road is well-kept and forms the eastern border of the mountains.

Exploring the Calico Hills
Most of the Calico Hills are special protected areas. These areas are called federally designated wilderness areas. They are part of a bigger place known as the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area. This means the land is kept wild and natural.
Calico Mountains Wilderness
The southern part of the Calico Hills is called the Calico Mountains Wilderness. This area is super interesting because it has many brightly colored rock formations. Imagine seeing mountains that look like they've been painted! The colors come from different minerals in the rocks. The land here ranges from about 3,950 feet high to 8,520 feet. The highest point in this wilderness is a peak called Donnelly Peak.
High Rock Lake Wilderness
The northern part of the Calico Hills also has a protected area. This area is known as the High Rock Lake Wilderness. It's another great place to explore nature.
Nearby Natural Wonders
The Calico Hills are surrounded by other cool natural features. To the east, you'll find the northwestern arm of the Black Rock Desert. You can also see Pahute Peak in the Black Rock Range there. To the southwest, there's another mountain range called the Granite Range. All these areas together make up a unique landscape in Nevada.
