History of California Hot Springs
The hot springs in this area are very old. Native Yokuts Indians knew about them long ago. They believed the springs had special healing powers.
Resorts have been built around these hot springs since the 1880s. Back then, the area was called Deer Creek Hot Springs. A big hotel called the Hotel Del Venado was built near the springs in 1902.
In the 1920s, more things were added. These included a shopping area, a swimming pool, and a place for treatments using the hot spring water. Sadly, the hotel burned down in 1932. The shopping area also burned down later, in 1968.
The area was left empty for a while. But in the mid-1980s, people started to fix it up again.
Geography and Location
California Hot Springs is located in Tulare County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the community covers an area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
The hot springs themselves are found along the southern bank of Deer Creek Canyon. There are several springs that release warm water. In 1915, a government expert said that these springs produce about 35 gallons of water per minute. The water temperature ranges from 120° to 126° Fahrenheit (about 49° to 52° Celsius).
There is another group of springs a little further upstream. These springs have cooler water, around 105° Fahrenheit (40° Celsius). The water from all the springs has a noticeable sulfur smell, but it doesn't have many other minerals.
