History of Callicoon
The town of Callicoon was created in 1842. It was formed from a part of the Town of Liberty. The name "Callicoon" was originally spelled "Collikoon."
What Does "Callicoon" Mean?
The name "Collikoon" is believed to mean "turkey." This word might come from the Dutch word kalkoen, which also means turkey. Some people thought it might come from the Choctaw language. However, the Choctaw people traditionally lived far away in the southern United States. They were not in this area.
