Calligra Stage is a free computer program that helps you create presentations. It's like a digital slideshow maker! It's part of the Calligra Suite, which is a collection of office programs made by a group called KDE.

Calligra Stage saves your presentations in a common format called OpenDocument. This means it can also open presentation files made with other popular programs like Microsoft PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, and OpenOffice Impress.

In 2014, the team announced they were working on a special version called Calligra Gemini. This version would officially work on Windows computers.

How Calligra Stage Started

The Early Days: KPresenter

A person named Reginald Stadlbauer started creating KPresenter in 1997. It was first released as part of the KOffice suite on October 23, 2000. This was when K Desktop Environment 2.0 came out. Over the next few years, new versions were released, adding more features and fixing problems.

Later, KOffice went through a big change when KDE Software Compilation 4 (often called SC4) was being developed. The KOffice team worked on a new version, KOffice 2.0, which used newer parts of the KDE system. When KOffice 2.0 came out in 2009, it was mostly for people who wanted to test it or for developers. It wasn't quite ready for everyone to use every day because some important features were missing.

This continued with version 2.1 in 2009. For a while, developers suggested that regular users stick with the older, more stable version 1.6.

In May 2010, version 2.2.0 was released. This version brought many new features and fixed a lot of bugs. It also added new ways to make cool effects on shapes in your presentations. Plus, it could now open files from newer Microsoft Office programs.

Around mid-2010, there was a disagreement among the developers. Because of this, KPresenter was renamed Calligra Stage. One of the developers decided to create a separate presentation tool called KOffice Showcase.

KOffice 2.3, released at the end of 2010, was still a team effort between the KOffice and Calligra developers. However, after that, KOffice was no longer actively worked on by KDE.

On May 18, 2011, the Calligra team started releasing monthly test versions as they got ready for the big release of Calligra 2.4.

The very first version of the Calligra Suite for Windows came out on December 21, 2011. It was labeled as "highly experimental," meaning it wasn't ready for daily use yet.

The team planned to release the final Calligra 2.4 in January 2012. However, they found some problems with the "undo" and "redo" features in Calligra Words and Stage. They had to rewrite parts of these features, which caused a delay. Calligra 2.4 was finally released on April 11, 2012.

Calligra 2.4 also introduced two new ways to use the software on mobile devices: Calligra Mobile and Calligra Active. Calligra Mobile was designed for smartphones. It was first shown in 2009 as a simple version for mobile phones. Later, a company called Nokia helped make a full mobile version with a touch-friendly screen.

Calligra Active was launched in 2011. It was similar to Calligra Mobile but made for tablet computers. It allowed you to view documents on tablets.

A company called Jolla continued Nokia's work on a smartphone version. In 2013, Jolla released Sailfish Office, which used parts of Calligra Active.

In September 2013, a special version of Krita (a drawing program) called Krita Gemini was released for Windows 8.1. This version was funded by Intel to promote "2-in-1" convertible notebooks, which can switch between a laptop and a tablet.

In April 2014, Intel and KO GmbH (a company involved in Calligra's development) extended their deal to include Gemini versions of Stage and Words. On August 28, 2014, the first test version of Calligra Gemini for Windows was released. On November 21, 2014, KDE announced that Calligra Gemini would officially be part of Calligra 2.9. Like Krita Gemini, this version added a touchscreen interface for Words and Stage. Users could switch between desktop and touch modes while using the program. Calligra Gemini continued the work of Calligra Active and Sailfish Office, but with added editing tools. A Linux version was shown on October 19, 2014.
