Calum Hood's Early Life

Calum Thomas Hood was born on January 25, 1996. He grew up in a place called Mount Druitt in New South Wales, Australia. His dad, David Hood, used to work for Coca-Cola. His mom, Joy Hood, worked in the superannuation industry. Calum has some Scottish family history from his dad's side. From his mom's side, he has Māori family history. Calum also has an older sister, Mali-Koa, who is a singer and songwriter.

Calum remembers his childhood as being "middle-class." He said it was "not the most glamorous life." He went to Norwest Primary School. There, he became friends with Michael Clifford, who would later become his bandmate. They met in the third grade. For high school, Calum went to Norwest Christian College. In Year 7, he met another future bandmate, Luke Hemmings. They became friends after singing a Secondhand Serenade song at a school talent show.

When he was a kid and a young teenager, Calum loved sports. He was especially good at football (soccer). He even had a "promising future" in the sport. He visited a training camp in Brazil to try and make football his career. However, after his band started, they moved to London in late 2012. Calum then decided to stop playing football to focus on music instead.

Calum later shared that after he quit football, his parents were worried. He said, "there was a period of a month where my parents thought I was making the worst decision of my life." His mom even threw out some of his clothes! But Calum felt he had made a big choice that would work out. He was right! After deciding to focus on music, he left high school in 2012 after finishing Year 11.

Calum Hood's Music Career

In 2011, Calum Hood, Michael Clifford, and Luke Hemmings started posting videos online. They would sing cover songs on Luke Hemmings' YouTube channel. Later, they asked their friend Ashton Irwin to join them. This completed the lineup for the band 5 Seconds of Summer. After many months of posting song covers, big music companies became interested in them. They signed a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

Since then, Calum has released five studio albums with 5 Seconds of Summer:

  • Sounds Good Feels Good (released in 2015)
  • Youngblood (released in 2018)
  • Calm (released in 2020)
