Calum Hood's Early Life

Calum Thomas Hood was born on 25 January 1996. He grew up in Mount Druitt, New South Wales, Australia. His dad, David Hood, used to work for Coca-Cola. His mom, Joy Hood, worked in the superannuation industry, which helps people save for retirement. Calum has Scottish family roots from his dad's side and Māori family roots from his mom's side. He also has an older sister named Mali-Koa Hood, who is a singer and songwriter. Calum remembers his childhood as being "middle-class" and not fancy.

Growing Up and Making Friends

Calum went to Norwest Primary School. There, he became friends with Michael Clifford in third grade. Michael later became a bandmate. For high school, Calum went to Norwest Christian College. In Year 7, he met another future bandmate, Luke Hemmings. They became friends after performing a song cover together at a school talent show.

From Football to Music

When Calum was a kid and a young teenager, he loved sports. He was especially good at football (soccer). He even had a "promising future" in the sport. He went to a training camp in Brazil to try and make football his career. However, after his band started, they moved to London in late 2012. Calum then decided to stop playing football to focus on music instead.

It was a big decision for him. Calum later said that for about a month, his parents thought he was making a bad choice. But it all worked out! After deciding to focus on music, he left high school in 2012 after finishing Year 11.

Calum Hood's Music Career

In 2011, Calum, Michael Clifford, and Luke Hemmings started posting videos of themselves singing cover songs on Luke's YouTube channel. Later, they asked their friend Ashton Irwin to join them. This completed the lineup for the band 5 Seconds of Summer.

Forming 5 Seconds of Summer

After many months of posting song covers, big music companies started to notice the band. They signed a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Since then, Calum has released five studio albums with 5 Seconds of Summer. These albums include 5 Seconds of Summer (2014), Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), Youngblood (2018), Calm (2020), and 5SOS5 (2022).
