Early life
Ashton Fletcher Irwin was born on 7 July 1994. His birthplace was Hornsby, in New South Wales, Australia. His father, who was American, left the family when Ashton was two years old. Because of this, Ashton and his family moved homes often. They mostly lived in Richmond and Windsor. Ashton's mother did not have much money. This meant that Ashton sometimes had a hard time getting enough to eat.
Ashton's uncle played drums in a heavy rock band. His step-father also played drums in a punk-rock band. Ashton learned to play drums when he was nine years old. He asked his step-father to teach him. Ashton helped take care of his younger half-brother Harry and half-sister Lauren. He did this while going to Richmond High School. He finished high school in 2012. Before joining 5 Seconds of Summer, Ashton was in a jazz-funk band called "Swallow the Goldfish." He formed it with his classmates. After leaving that band, Ashton studied music for a year at a TAFE college. He then left college to focus on 5 Seconds of Summer.
Career
In late 2011, Ashton got a message on Facebook. It was from his friend and future bandmate, Michael Clifford. Michael asked if Ashton wanted to play music with him, Calum Hood, and Luke Hemmings. Ashton said yes. He joined the three friends in posting song covers on Luke Hemmings' YouTube channel. This is how the band 5 Seconds of Summer was formed. After many months of posting covers, music companies became interested in the band. They signed a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
Ashton has released five studio albums with the band. All of them have been very successful worldwide. These albums are: 5 Seconds of Summer (2014), Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), Youngblood (2018), Calm (2020), and 5SOS5 (2022).
Besides his work with the band, Ashton has also written songs and played instruments for other artists. These include Andy Black, The Faim, and Makeout.
On 23 September 2020, Ashton announced his first solo album. It was called Superbloom and came out on 23 October 2020. Before the album, he released a song called "Skinny Skinny." This song was about feelings people have about their bodies. Ashton said he had "never talked about this in music before." He explained that Superbloom explores his "inner thoughts and feelings about life." He also said he was very happy to be in a band that lets him create music both inside and outside of it.
In 2024, Ashton announced his second solo album, Blood on the Drums. It will be released on 17 July 2024. The first song from the album was "Straight to Your Heart." This song was described as an upbeat pop song with an 80s feel. Ashton helped write and produce it with John Feldmann. Ashton said the title "Blood on the Drums" is a way to show how much effort he puts into his music. Unlike Superbloom, which was made during the pandemic and was very personal, Blood on the Drums looks more at the world around him. The album will come out in two parts. The first eight songs were released digitally on 12 June. The full album will be released on 19 July 2024.
Personal life
Ashton Irwin cares a lot about mental health and speaks up about it.
In 2017, news reports said Ashton bought a large house in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles. In 2018, he reportedly bought a second home, a penthouse, in West Hollywood. As of 2020, Ashton's net worth is thought to be about $20 million (USD).
