Ashton Irwin's Early Life
Ashton Fletcher Irwin was born on 7 July 1994 in Hornsby, Australia. He moved homes often when he was a child. He lived mostly in Richmond and Windsor. Ashton's mother did not have a lot of money. Because of this, he sometimes struggled to get enough food.
Ashton's uncle was a drummer in a band. His step-father also played drums in a band. Ashton learned to play drums when he was nine years old. He asked his step-father to teach him. Ashton helped take care of his younger half-siblings, Harry and Lauren. He went to Richmond High School and finished in 2012. Before joining 5 Seconds of Summer, Ashton had a jazz-funk band called "Swallow the Goldfish" with his friends from school. He later studied music at a college before leaving to focus on 5 Seconds of Summer.
Ashton Irwin's Music Career
Joining 5 Seconds of Summer
In late 2011, Ashton received a message on Facebook. It was from his friend and future bandmate, Michael Clifford. Michael asked if Ashton wanted to play music with him, Calum Hood, and Luke Hemmings. Ashton agreed and joined the group. They started posting covers of songs on Luke Hemmings' YouTube channel. This is how the band 5 Seconds of Summer was formed.
After several months of posting song covers, music companies became interested in the band. They signed a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Ashton has released five studio albums with the band. All of these albums have been very successful worldwide. These albums include 5 Seconds of Summer (2014), Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), Youngblood (2018), Calm (2020), and 5SOS5 (2022).
Solo Music Projects
Besides his work with 5 Seconds of Summer, Ashton has also written songs and played instruments for other artists. These artists include Andy Black, The Faim, and Makeout.
On 23 September 2020, Ashton announced his first solo album. It was called Superbloom. The album was released on 23 October 2020. Before the album, he released a song called "Skinny Skinny." This song was about body image. Ashton said he had "never confronted [this topic] in a creative form" before. He shared that Superbloom explores his "inner philosophies and feelings" about his life journey. He also said it brought him great joy to be in a band that allowed him to create music both inside and outside of it.
In 2024, Ashton announced his second solo album, Blood on the Drums. This album was released on 17 July 2024. The first song from the album was "Straight to Your Heart." This song was described as an '80s new wave-inspired pop anthem. Ashton co-wrote and produced it with John Feldmann. Unlike Superbloom, which was made during the pandemic and focused on personal thoughts, Blood on the Drums looks more at the world around him. Blood on the Drums was released in two parts. The first eight songs were available digitally on 12 June. The full album was released on 19 July 2024.
Ashton Irwin's Personal Life
Ashton has spoken openly about overcoming challenges and focusing on his mental health. In April 2020, he shared that he had been focusing on his health for ten months. During the band's 2019 tour, Ashton posted on social media about taking ice baths before each show. He did this as a way to support his well-being.
Ashton previously dated model Bryana Holly for about a year. They broke up in June 2016. In 2018, he began an on-again off-again relationship with fashion blogger and photographer Kaitlin Blaisdell.
In 2017, reports said Ashton bought a large house in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles. In 2018, he reportedly bought a second property, a penthouse, in West Hollywood. As of 2020, Ashton's net worth was estimated to be $20 million (USD).
