History of Calvert

How Calvert Got Its Name

The community of Calvert was named after George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore. He was a very important person in the history of Maryland. He helped to establish the colony of Maryland.

Old Buildings and Their Stories

The heart of Calvert village used to be the Cross Keys Inn. This inn, or tavern, was built way back in 1774. Today, the Cross Keys Inn is a private home made of brick. Right next to it, you'll find the Calvert Elementary School. This school is part of the Cecil County Public Schools system.

Another very old building in Calvert is the East Nottingham Friends House. This house played a special role during the American Revolutionary War. In 1778, William Smallwood, who was a general in the war, used the house as a hospital. Many soldiers who were hurt or sick were cared for there. Some soldiers who died at the hospital are buried on the grounds of the house.
