Calvin B. Fowler (February 11, 1940 – March 5, 2013) was an amazing American basketball player. He was known for his skills as a point guard. Calvin played a big role in leading the United States national basketball team to two gold medals.

He was the captain of the U.S. team that won gold at the 1967 Pan American Games. The next year, he was also a co-captain for the U.S. team that won gold at the 1968 Summer Olympics.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Calvin Fowler was born on February 11, 1940, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He went to David B. Oliver High School in Pittsburgh. He graduated from high school in June 1957.

During his time at Oliver High School, Calvin was a star player. In January 1958, he scored an incredible 61 points in one game! His team won 101–35 against Allegheny Vocational. At halftime, Oliver was only leading 27–20, with Calvin having 22 points. But in the second half, he scored 39 more points, showing his amazing talent.

College and Amateur Career

After high school, Calvin went to Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania. He played college basketball there from 1959 to 1962. He graduated from Saint Francis in 1962.

In the early 1960s, Calvin joined the Akron Wingfoots. This was an amateur basketball team. He was recognized as an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) All-American twice. He earned this honor in 1967 and again in 1968 while playing for the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots.

Olympic and Pan American Games Success

Calvin Fowler's biggest achievements came on the international stage. He was a key player for the United States national team. He played for the U.S. team 18 times in total.

In 1967, he led the U.S. team as captain to a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg. The following year, in 1968, he was a co-captain for the U.S. team at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City. They also won a gold medal there, making him an Olympic champion!

Professional Basketball

After his successful amateur and Olympic career, Calvin Fowler played professional basketball. He joined the Carolina Cougars in the American Basketball Association (ABA). He played for the Cougars during the 1969–70 season.

Later Life

Calvin B. Fowler passed away on March 5, 2013, at the age of 73. He is buried in the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Maryland.
