Cameron Avery (born 21 April 1988) is an Australian musician, singer, and songwriter. He plays many instruments, including guitar, bass, and drums. Cameron is well-known for being a member of the bands Pond and Tame Impala. He also led his own band, The Growl.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Cameron Avery was born in East Fremantle, Australia. As a child, he moved around a bit, living in places like Broome and Como. He went to Collier Primary School. Cameron has said that he didn't always feel like he fit in at school, but he was good at choir.

When he was young, Cameron dreamed of becoming a professional Australian rules footballer. He wanted to play for the West Coast Eagles. However, he started playing guitar when he was sixteen and began writing songs at seventeen. He also played piano sometimes as a child. Cameron listened to a lot of gospel, blues, and soul music, especially artists like Skip James and Son House.

Music Career

Cameron Avery started his music journey playing drums for singer Abbe May. Soon after, he formed his own band called The Growl.

Joining the Perth Music Scene

A friend helped Cameron connect with Kevin Parker, the leader of the band Tame Impala. Cameron then became a big part of the music scene in Perth. He helped start the band Pond with Jay Watson, Jamie Terry, and Joe Ryan. Cameron also lived with fellow musician Nick Allbrook, and they formed a duo called Allbrook/Avery.

The Growl and Tame Impala

Cameron formed and led Fremantle-based garage rock band, The Growl. They released their first EP, Clever Lever, in 2011. Their first full album, What Would Christ Do??, came out in 2013. The Growl also toured with Tame Impala in America in 2012 and 2013. They also supported English musician Jake Bugg in 2014.

In May 2013, Nick Allbrook left Tame Impala to work on other projects. Cameron Avery then joined Tame Impala, becoming a new member of the band.

Other Projects

After joining Tame Impala, Cameron and Kevin Parker started a funk band called AAA Aardvark Getdown Services. They formed this band to help a friend, Felicity Groom, who had her car stolen. Cameron played bass in this band.

Cameron also worked with the London-based band The Horrors. They recorded new music for Allbrook/Avery in London. They plan to release two albums from these sessions, called Sunroom and Wedding Songs.

Pond released their sixth album, Man It Feels Like Space Again, in January 2015. Kevin Parker mixed this album in his studio in Perth.

In 2016, Cameron toured with The Last Shadow Puppets. He also contributed backing vocals to Arctic Monkeys' 2018 album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. After that, he joined Arctic Monkeys on tour, playing different instruments for their live shows.

Solo Music

On 10 March 2017, Cameron Avery released his own solo album called Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams. He said he wanted to make music that sounded like old records he loved. He mentioned artists like Johnny Hartman, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Etta James. These were big band songs with very clear lyrics.

Music critics reviewed his album. Pitchfork said it was a "focused record with several wonderful songs." The Skinny described it as "heartfelt as all hell."
