Early Life and Music Beginnings
Jake Bugg was born in Nottingham, England. His parents were also musical, but they separated when he was young. Jake grew up in a place called Clifton.
He started playing guitar when he was 12 years old. His uncle Mark introduced him to the instrument. A big moment for him was hearing Don McLean's song "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" on an episode of The Simpsons. This inspired him to pursue music.
Jake went to Farnborough School Technology College. He even took a music technology course. But by the time he was 16, he decided to focus on writing and performing his own songs.
Jake Bugg's Music Career
Starting Out in 2011
Jake Bugg got his big break at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival. He was only 16 when he was chosen to perform on the "BBC Introducing" stage. This happened after he sent his music to their website. Soon after, he signed a record deal with Mercury Records.
His songs started playing on BBC Radio. One of his songs, "Country Song", was even used in a TV commercial for a beer company!
First Album: Jake Bugg (2012)
Jake's first album, Jake Bugg, was released on 15 October 2012. Music critics praised his amazing talent, saying he mixed old-school folk music with modern rock.
Just a week after its release, his song "Two Fingers" reached number 28 in the UK music charts. The album itself went straight to number one in the UK charts! It sold over 600,000 copies in the UK, making it one of the best-selling albums of the 2010s.
Jake also appeared on popular TV shows like Later... with Jools Holland. He even opened for famous bands like Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds at music festivals. His song "Simple As This" was later featured in the movie The Fault in Our Stars.
Second Album: Shangri La (2013)
Jake traveled to Malibu, California, to work on his second album with famous producer Rick Rubin. He also worked with Chad Smith, the drummer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, on some songs.
On 8 September 2013, Jake announced that his second album was finished. It was called Shangri La and was released on 18 November 2013. The album was named after the studio where he recorded it. It received many positive reviews from music fans and critics.
In 2013, Jake was nominated for a "British Breakthrough Act" award at the Brit Awards. This award is voted on by listeners of BBC Radio 1.
Jake performed at many big festivals in 2013. He played on the main Pyramid Stage at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival. This was special because he was the first artist to move from the BBC Introducing Stage to the main stage in just two years! He also supported The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park in London and headlined the Splendour festival in Nottingham.
Third Album: On My One (2016)
In early 2015, Jake shared that he was working on his third album. He said the songs would be "much darker" than his previous work.
On 16 February 2016, he released a new song called "On My One" for free. Soon after, his new single "Gimme the Love" was played on BBC Radio 1. He announced that his third album, On My One, would be released on 17 June 2016.
A popular TV show called Happy Valley used his 2012 single "Trouble Town" as its theme song for all three of its seasons.
Fourth Album: Hearts That Strain (2017)
On 2 August 2017, Jake Bugg's new song "How Soon the Dawn" was played on BBC Radio 1. He released the song with a music video a few days later. He then announced his fourth album, Hearts That Strain, which came out on 1 September 2017. This album was mostly acoustic, meaning it featured a lot of guitar without electric instruments.
In December 2018, Jake signed with RCA, a new record label, to help restart his career.
Fifth Album: Saturday Night, Sunday Morning (2021)
On 26 October 2020, Jake released the single "All I Need." This song followed "Rabbit Hole" and "Saviours Of The City," which was his first new music of 2020. He also released a short film with "Saviours Of The City."
