Etymology Scottish Gaelic: north bay

Camas Tuath is a beautiful bay located on the Ross of Mull, which is part of the Isle of Mull in Scotland. Its name comes from Scottish Gaelic and means "north bay." This special place is known for its peaceful surroundings and exciting outdoor activities.

What is Camas Tuath?

Camas Tuath is a small bay that reaches inland from the sea. It has two tiny islands that appear and disappear with the tides. Along the shore, you'll find two old Quarrymans' Cottages. These cottages are now used by the Iona Community as an adventure camp.

Getting There

You can reach Camas Tuath by walking about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) down a moorland track. It's a lovely walk through nature. You can also get there by boat, which offers a different view of the bay.

The Camas Centre

The Camas Centre is based in the old Quarrymans' Cottages. It offers many fun and challenging activities for young people.

Exciting Activities

At the centre, you can try out many different adventures. These include:

  • Kayaking on the water
  • Coasteering, which is exploring the coastline by climbing and jumping
  • Abseiling down cliffs
  • Hill-walking in the beautiful landscape
  • Building rafts to float on the water
  • Fishing
  • Learning to juggle
  • Doing arts and crafts

An Eco-Friendly Place

The Camas Centre is very focused on being kind to the environment.

  • It has an organic garden where different gardeners have worked over the years.
  • The garden has two polytunnels, which are like mini-greenhouses. Inside, they grow fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and other vegetables.
  • You can also find many different herbs and sometimes fruit in the garden.
  • Further up, there are special beds that use seaweed to help grow hardy vegetables like carrots.
  • The garden also features a shed, an igloo made from willow branches, and a hidden shed among the trees.
  • At the top of the garden, there's a round house with a space for a fire in the middle.

Centre Renovations

The two main buildings at the Camas Centre are over 160 years old. They were updated in 2006 to make them more modern and eco-friendly.

Modern Upgrades

During the renovations, several important changes were made:

  • Mains water was added, providing fresh water to the centre.
  • A 6-kilowatt wind turbine was installed. This turbine uses wind power to create electricity for the centre.
  • An Aquatron system was put in place. This is a special composting toilet system that turns human waste into useful compost using composting worms. This helps the environment by recycling waste.

Welcoming Guests

The centre was closed during the renovations for safety reasons. But now, Camas is open again and welcomes up to 28 guests each week. They offer different types of weeks, including:

  • Activity weeks, full of adventures
  • Themed weeks, focusing on special topics
  • Work weeks, where guests can help with tasks around the centre
  • Garden weeks, for those interested in gardening
  • Open weeks, for a more relaxed stay
