History of Camden

Camden was started in 1837 by a landowner named Easton Chester and his sons. The community grew around several sawmills, which were places that cut wood. A post office opened there on August 10, 1837, and was first called Cranbrook.

The name of the post office changed to Camden on September 7, 1840. The name "Camden" was chosen by chance, by drawing it from a hat. It was suggested by Easton Chester, who named it after his hometown of Camden, New York. The community was officially mapped out in 1867 and became an official village in 1899.
