Camille Archibald Baquet (1842 – 1924) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry regiment. He also wrote the first history book about his military group, known as the First New Jersey Brigade.
Life and Military Service
Camille Baquet was born in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1842. He was one of eight children. His father was a law professor from Paris, and his mother's family came from England. Camille grew up in Burlington, New Jersey.
In September 1862, Camille joined the army as a private. He served with the 16th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. In April 1863, he became a second lieutenant. He then joined Company A of the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry.
During his time with the 1st New Jersey, his regiment fought in several important battles. These included the Battle of Chancellorsville and the Battle of Gettysburg. They also fought in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. His service ended in June 1864, and he was honorably discharged.
Later Life and Writing
After the war, Camille Baquet worked as a bookkeeper. In 1910, he published an important book. It was called History of the First Brigade, New Jersey Volunteers (Kearny's First New Jersey Brigade) from 1861 to 1865.
This book told the military story of his brigade. For many years, it was the only full history of that famous group.
Camille Baquet passed away in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was buried in the Saint Peter's Church Cemetery.
