Camille Muffat (born October 28, 1989 – died March 9, 2015) was a famous French swimmer. She won three medals at the Olympics. Camille swam for the Olympic Nice Natation club. She was best at individual medley and freestyle races. Her swimming career lasted from 2005 to 2014.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Camille won a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle. She also earned a silver medal in the 200-meter freestyle. Plus, she won a bronze medal with her team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. This made her the fourth French swimmer to win an individual Olympic gold. She was also the third French athlete to win three Olympic medals at one Olympic Games.
Camille passed away at age 25 during the filming of a French TV reality show called Dropped. This happened in an accident in Villa Castelli, Argentina.

Early Life and Education
Camille Marie Manuella Muffat was born in Nice, France, on October 28, 1989. She was the middle child in her family. She had an older sister, Chloé, and a younger brother, Quentin. Her father, Guy Muffat, was a physical therapist. Her mother, Laurence, worked as a nurse.
After finishing high school, Camille started studying economics. At the same time, she continued her swimming training. She was part of a special program for high-performance athletes. Eventually, she decided to leave school to focus completely on her swimming career.
Camille's Swimming Career
Camille Muffat first trained as a medley swimmer. She was especially good at the breaststroke and freestyle parts of the medley race. These are the last two styles in a medley event.
After a strong start, her results in medley events began to slow down. Camille felt she couldn't reach her goals by swimming medley. So, her coach, Fabrice Pellerin, suggested she switch to freestyle events. Under his guidance, Camille trained very hard. She even trained on Sundays for a year before the 2012 Olympic Games.
Rising Star: 2005–2007
Camille first gained attention in 2005. She beat another French swimmer, Laure Manaudou, in the 200-meter individual medley. This happened at the French National Championship. She also set a new French national record.
A few months later, she won the 200-meter individual medley at the European Junior Championships. She also won a silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the same event.
In 2006, Camille joined the senior European Championships. She swam in the 4 × 100 meters freestyle relay for France. Later that year, she won four medals, including one gold, at the World Junior Championships. In December 2006, she won her first international medal at the European Short Course Championships.
In 2007, Camille competed in her first World Championship in Australia. She reached the semifinals in the 400-meter medley. By the end of 2007, she had her first senior win. Building Momentum: 2008–2011
In March 2008, Camille won her first medal in a senior, long-course international event. She took bronze in the 200-meter individual medley at the European Championships.
At the 2008 French national championships, Camille tied for first in the 400-meter individual medley. She set a new French record. Two days later, she won gold in the 200-meter individual medley. She broke Laure Manaudou's French record again. These wins helped her qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Camille only reached the final of the relay. Her team finished fifth.
Later, at the 2008 European Short Course Championships, she finished second in the 400-meter freestyle. She also placed fifth in both the 200- and 400-meter individual medley events.
In 2009, Camille set another new French record in the 200-meter individual medley. At the World Championships in Rome, she finished seventh in the 200-meter individual medley final.
At the 2010 French Championship, she won both the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley events. At the European Championships in Budapest, she aimed for gold in the 200-meter individual medley but finished fourth. Her team also won silver in the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay.
After these results, her coach suggested she focus only on freestyle. Camille chose freestyle and quickly improved. She won all freestyle distances (50m, 100m, 200m, 400m) at the next French Championships. She also broke the French record in the 100-meter freestyle.
A month later, at the 2010 World Short Course Championships in Dubai, Camille won her first world title. She won the 200-meter freestyle event. She also earned a bronze medal with the French 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay team.
In 2011, Camille won all four freestyle distances (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m) at the French Championships. This qualified her for all these events at the World Championships in Shanghai. There, she won two bronze medals in the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle events.
Olympic Glory and Retirement: 2012–2014
In March 2012, at the French Championships, Camille won the 400-meter freestyle. She broke Laure Manaudou's French record. Her time was the fastest in the world that year. This earned her a spot at the Olympic Games. Two days later, she won the 200-meter freestyle, breaking her own French record. This also qualified her for the Olympics.
Camille competed in three events at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She won the gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle with a new Olympic record. Passing Away
On March 9, 2015, Camille Muffat was part of a group of sports stars. They were filming a French reality TV show called Dropped. Camille, along with nine other people, passed away in an accident during filming in Argentina. Her funeral was held in Nice, France, on March 25. It was a joint service with boxer Alexis Vastine, who also passed away in the same accident.
Awards and Recognition
Camille Muffat had sponsorship deals during her career. She signed with Électricité de France before the 2012 Olympic Games. The French Olympic Committee also gives money prizes to athletes who win medals.
On January 1, 2013, Camille Muffat was honored. She was made a Knight (Chevalier) of the Légion d'honneur. This is a very important award in France.
