War in Egypt
Even though the war in Europe was winding down, battles were still happening in other parts of the world. A big part of the fighting in 1801 took place in Egypt.
British Expedition to Egypt
In March, British soldiers landed in Egypt. They fought several important battles there. These included the Battle of Abukir and the Battle of Alexandria. After these battles, the British began a siege of the city of Alexandria.
End of the French Campaign
The French had been in Egypt and Syria since 1798. But after the British siege, the French soldiers in Egypt finally surrendered on September 2. This surrender marked the end of the French campaign in Egypt and Syria.
The war at sea was also very active in 1801. The United Kingdom used its strong navy to try and stop ships from reaching France. This was called a naval blockade.
Protecting Neutral Ships
Some countries, like Russia, Prussia, Denmark, and Sweden, were not fighting in the war. They wanted to protect their ships from being attacked by the British. So, they formed a group to try and keep their trade routes safe. However, they were not very successful.
Battle of Copenhagen
A famous British admiral named Horatio Nelson led an attack on the Danish fleet. This happened in the harbor at the Battle of Copenhagen. Nelson's forces destroyed many of Denmark's ships. Denmark was an ally of France at the time. After this battle, a ceasefire agreement stopped Nelson from sailing further into the Baltic Sea to attack the Russian fleet.
Battles of Algeciras
There were also important naval battles near Gibraltar. A French squadron, led by Linois, faced a British attack. In the first battle of Algeciras, the French managed to fight off the British. They even captured a large British warship.
Just four days later, the two sides fought again in the second battle of Algeciras. This time, the British won a big victory. They captured a French ship and sank two Spanish ships. Sadly, about 2,000 Spanish sailors lost their lives in this battle, while only 12 British sailors were killed.
What Happened Next
The events of 1801 helped lead to a temporary peace. The next year, the Treaty of Amiens was signed, bringing a short break in the fighting. However, the larger Napoleonic Wars would soon begin.
